A library inauguration party is key to creating a sense of value for the community of this new space. It acts as a celebration of the work they have completed, and creates a sense of anticipation for the opportunities to come.
Chispa Project, through whom we have been working to start the Adrian Mejia primary school library in El Progreso, Honduras, greatly values this aspect of the library creation process, and organised a full day of activities for the entire student body at Adrian Mejia. Over 300 kids spent the day traveling around seven stations and getting stamps in their “passport” as they completed each activity – from puppet shows to arts and crafts activities.
The library at the Adrian Mejia school is now up and running, and is visited by each class, from grades 1 through 6, once every week, during which time each student checks out one book to keep in their classroom to read until the next library visit. The library is also open to the wider community, allowing older students and even parents and other community members to come in to read and enjoy the library space.

Una fiesta para inaugurar la biblioteca es crucial para fomentar en la comunidad un sentimiento del valor de este nuevo espacio. Sirve para celebrar el trabajo que han hecho, y crea una anticipación para las oportunidades que están por venir.
Proyecto Chispa, con que hemos estado colaborando para iniciar la biblioteca de la escuela Adrian Mejia en El Progreso, Honduras, valora mucho a este aspecto del proceso, y organizó un día completo de actividades para todos los estudiantes de Adrian Mejia. Más de 300 niños pasaron el día viajando por siete estaciones y obteniendo sellos en su “pasaporte” al completar cada actividad – desde un show de títeres, hasta arte y manualidades.
La biblioteca en la escuela Adrian Mejia ya está en marcha, y cada clase desde el primer grado hasta el sexto la visita una vez a la semana, durante cual tiempo cada alumno toma prestado un libro para guardar en su aula y leer hasta su siguiente visita. La biblioteca también está abierta para la comunidad, permitiendo que los alumnos mayores, los padres, y la gente de la comunidad puedan venir a leer y disfrutar de la biblioteca.
