My name is Elvin Pérez, a scholarship student and leader at educate., and I come from a rural mountain community in Chinda, Santa Bárbara.

In my community, many young men grow up without access to spaces where they can truly be heard. They are raised with the idea that they must always be strong, never cry, and never express their emotions. They are expected to simply “tough it out” and stay silent about what they feel. I have seen how this creates difficulties, such as not knowing how to manage emotions, dealing with social pressure, and, in some cases, developing violent behaviours.

educate. is a space that helps break those patterns, promote respect, and build healthier relationships within the community.

In this blog, I want to share a part of my journey with educate. – from how I first arrived, to how I have grown as a leader and youth facilitator. I hope my story helps others better understand the work educate. does and the powerful impact it has on our lives.

Arriving at educate. as a Scholarship Student

In 2023, I came to the educate. Youth Center for the first time after some classmates encouraged me to apply for a scholarship. I remember that day very clearly: I was extremely nervous and could barely speak. I had no idea that moment would become a turning point in my life.

Over the following months, educate. became a place where I began to discover my voice. Through the activities and support I received, I developed confidence in myself, learned how to express my thoughts, and improved the way I connected with others. Little by little, that shy young man began to transform.

In 2024, I received a great opportunity: joining the team as a part-time administrative assistant. This experience allowed me to gain new knowledge, develop professional skills, and understand the value of commitment and responsibility. That same year, in November, I graduated with a Technical High School Diploma in Information Technology. For me, this was a deeply meaningful achievement, because at one point during my teenage years, I believed it would never be possible.

Growing in Leadership

In 2025, I took on the challenge of leading the UniDeportes sports programme, an experience that has been especially meaningful to me because football has always been one of my passions. Working with young people full of energy and dreams has motivated me to continue growing as a leader. In every session, I try to share a clear message with them: believe in yourselves and fight for your goals, because achieving them is possible.

In 2025, educate. continued opening doors for me by giving me the opportunity to access a university scholarship. Today, I am studying Industrial Production Technology at the Technological University of Honduras (UTH), becoming the first person in my family to attend university. This achievement is not only mine, but also belongs to everyone who has believed in me and supported me along the way.

Training in Healthy Masculinities

Beyond academics and professional development, educate. has played a key role in my personal growth. Through monthly workshops, I have learned about mental health, self-esteem, bullying prevention, how to create a life plan, and many other important topics. However, one experience deeply changed the way I see the world: my participation in the HEEL Initiative on healthy masculinities.

This space, shared with young people from different countries across Central America, was completely new to me. For the first time, I was in an environment made up only of men, openly talking about our emotions, experiences, and challenges. It was a safe space where I realized that men also need to be heard, that we also face struggles, and that expressing what we feel does not make us weak – it makes us human.

From my perspective, one of the greatest needs in rural communities is having safe spaces where men can express themselves without fear of being judged, and where they can receive education about emotional intelligence, respect, and equality.

These spaces have taught me that expressing my emotions does not make me weak. I have learned to listen to others, to become more empathetic, and to understand that everyone faces internal struggles. Being able to share experiences with other men has helped me realize that I am not alone, and that many of us feel similar things even if we do not always say them out loud.

Role Models

There are two people who have been great role models for me: Rodrigo Barraza and Mauricio Táquez Durán. They are highly knowledgeable about healthy masculinities and have shown a strong commitment to creating spaces where men can express themselves and feel heard. I admire their leadership and the way they facilitate these processes, because they build trust and encourage reflection in a respectful and approachable way.

Through their training sessions, I have seen the impact that can be achieved when these topics are addressed consistently. Their example has motivated me to continue growing in this process and to share these lessons with other young people, helping create safer and more conscious spaces.

Putting Learning into Practice

Through the HEEL Initiative, I have learned methodologies based on open dialogue, active listening, trust circles, and activities that encourage reflection on personal experiences. I now put these new skills into practice with the young people in the UniDeportes programme, creating spaces where they can talk about what they feel and support one another.

I have seen very positive changes. Some young people now express themselves more openly and participate with greater confidence. I have also noticed more openness to discussing topics that were once difficult, such as emotions or personal struggles, because the young people feel safe and comfortable sharing the feelings and emotions they have carried as an internal burden.

I believe this work can grow even further by bringing healthy masculinity spaces to more rural communities and strengthening the training of young leaders in this area.

Reflections

In rural areas, many stereotypes still exist about what it means to “be a man.” Too often, there are no spaces where these conversations can happen – but we need them.

Thanks to this experience, today I feel more confident in who I am. I have learned to communicate better, to listen with empathy, and to support other young people. Many of them, just like me at one point in my life, need a space where they can feel understood and supported.

Today, I can proudly say that educate. has not only given me opportunities, but has also shaped me as a leader and as a person. My story is proof that when we are given support and believe in our own abilities, we can transform our lives and positively impact the lives of others as well.

Repensando lo que significa ser hombre: la perspectiva de un joven del área rural de Honduras

Soy Elvin Pérez, joven becado y líder en educate., y proveniente de una comunidad rural montanera de Chinda, Santa Bárbara.

En mi comunidad, muchos hombres jóvenes crecen sin acceso a espacios donde pueden ser escuchados. Crecen con la idea de que deben ser fuertes, no llorar, y no expresar sus emociones. Se espera que siempre “aguanten,” y que no hablen de lo que sienten. He visto como esto genera dificultades, como el no saber manejar emociones, la presión social y, en algunos casos, actitudes de violencia.

educate. es un espacio que permite romper esos patrones, fomentar el respeto, y construir una convivencia más sana en la comunidad.

En este blog, comparto un poco de mi historia con educate., desde como llegue, hasta como me he formado como líder y facilitador. Espero que lo compartido pueda servir para entender todo lo que se hace desde educate., y el poderoso impacto de nuestro trabajo.

Llegando a educate. como joven becado

En 2023 llegué por primera vez al Centro Juvenil de educate. gracias a la motivación de algunos compañeros que me animaron a aplicar a una beca. Recuerdo claramente ese día: estaba muy nervioso, casi no podía hablar. No imaginaba que ese momento marcaría un antes y un después en mi vida.

Con el paso de los meses, educate. se convirtió en un espacio donde comencé a descubrir mi voz. A través de las actividades y el acompañamiento, fui desarrollando confianza en mí mismo, aprendiendo a expresarme y a relacionarme mejor con otras personas. Poco a poco, ese joven tímido empezó a transformarse.

En 2024 recibí una gran oportunidad: formar parte del equipo como asistente administrativo a medio tiempo. Esta experiencia me permitió adquirir nuevos conocimientos, desarrollar habilidades profesionales y entender el valor del compromiso y la responsabilidad. Ese mismo año, en noviembre, logré graduarme como Bachiller Técnico en Informática. Para mí, este fue un logro muy significativo, ya que en algún momento de mi adolescencia pensé que no sería posible.

Creciendo en liderazgo

En 2025 asumí el reto de liderar el programa UniDeportes, una experiencia que ha sido muy especial para mí, ya que el fútbol siempre ha sido una de mis pasiones. Trabajar con jóvenes llenos de energía y sueños me ha motivado a seguir creciendo como líder. En cada encuentro, procuro transmitirles un mensaje claro: que crean en sí mismos y que luchen por sus metas, porque sí es posible lograrlas.

En 2025, educate. continuó abriéndome puertas al brindarme la oportunidad de acceder a una beca universitaria. Hoy estudio el Técnico en Producción Industrial en la Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras (UTH), convirtiéndome en el primero de mi familia en ingresar a la universidad. Este logro no solo es mío, sino también de todas las personas que han creído en mí y me han apoyado en el camino.

Formación en masculinidades

Más allá de lo académico y profesional, educate. ha sido clave en mi formación personal. A través de los talleres mensuales, he aprendido sobre salud mental, autoestima, prevención del bullying, como crear un plan de vida, y otros temas fundamentales. Sin embargo, hubo una experiencia que marcó profundamente mi forma de ver el mundo: mi participación en la iniciativa HEEL sobre masculinidades sanas.

Este espacio, compartido con jóvenes de distintos países de Centroamérica, fue algo completamente nuevo para mí. Por primera vez estuve en un entorno donde solo participábamos hombres, hablando abiertamente sobre nuestras emociones, experiencias y desafíos. Fue un espacio seguro, donde entendí que los hombres también necesitamos ser escuchados, que también enfrentamos dificultades y que expresar lo que sentimos no nos hace débiles, sino más humanos.

Desde mi perspectiva, una de las mayores necesidades en las comunidades rurales, es tener espacios seguros donde los hombres puedan expresarse sin miedo a ser juzgados, y recibir educación sobre inteligencia emocional, respeto y equidad.

Estos espacios me han enseñado que expresar mis emociones no me hace débil, sino más humano. He aprendido a escuchar a otros, a ser más empático y a comprender que todos enfrentamos luchas internas. Poder compartir con otros hombres me ha ayudado a darme cuenta de que no estoy solo, y que muchos sentimos cosas similares pero no siempre lo decimos.

Modelos a seguir

Hay dos personas que han sido un gran ejemplo para mí, que son Rodrigo Barraza y Mauricio Táquez Duran. Ellos están muy formados en el tema de masculinidades sanas y han demostrado un fuerte compromiso con la creación de espacios donde los hombres puedan expresarse y ser escuchados. Admiro su liderazgo y la forma en que facilitan estos procesos, ya que generan confianza y promueven la reflexión de una manera muy cercana y respetuosa.

A través de sus formaciones, he visto el impacto que pueden tener cuando se trabaja constantemente en estos temas. Su ejemplo me ha motivado a seguir creciendo en este proceso y a replicar estos aprendizajes con otros jóvenes, promoviendo espacios más seguros y conscientes.

Poniendo el aprendizaje en practica

A través de la Iniciativa HEEL he aprendido metodologías basadas en el diálogo abierto, la escucha activa y los círculos de confianza, y también dinámicas donde se reflexiona sobre experiencias personales. Estas nuevas habilidades los pongo en práctica con los jóvenes del programa UniDeportes, creando espacios donde ellos puedan hablar de lo que sienten y apoyarse entre ellos.

He visto cambios muy positivos: Algunos jóvenes ahora se expresan más y participan con confianza. También he notado que hay más apertura para hablar de temas que antes eran difíciles, como las emociones o los problemas personales, porque los jóvenes se sienten en confianza y expresan todos aquellos sentimientos y emociones que han llevado como una carga interna.

Creo que este trabajo se puede ampliar aún más, llevando los espacios de masculinidades sanas a más comunidades rurales, y fortaleciendo la formación de jóvenes como líderes en este tema.

Reflexiones

En las zonas rurales, todavía existen muchos estereotipos marcados sobre lo que significa “ser hombre”. Muchas veces no hay espacios donde hablar de estos temas, pero las necesitamos.

Gracias a esta experiencia, hoy me siento más seguro de quién soy. He aprendido a comunicarme mejor, a escuchar con empatía, y a acompañar a otros jóvenes. Muchos de ellos, al igual que yo en algún momento, necesitan un espacio donde puedan sentirse comprendidos y apoyados.

Hoy puedo decir con orgullo que educate. no solo me ha brindado oportunidades, sino que me ha formado como líder y como persona. Mi historia es una prueba de que, cuando se nos brinda apoyo y creemos en nuestras capacidades, podemos transformar nuestra vida y también impactar la de otros.
