After almost two years, Honduran schools have begun a gradual return to classroom learning. However, in recent weeks a significant increase in positive COVID-19 cases associated with the Omicron variant has been detected. With the new school year set to start in February, we will have to wait to see what is going to happen.
In universities, a large part of the classes continue online, as is the case with our scholarship students Stephanie, Tania and Javier. We know that it has not been an easy time, so we talked to each one of them to hear how they have experienced this period with their studies, personally and their goals for this new year.
Tania
Time goes by so fast! Tania has just finished her fourth academic year of Industrial Engineering in San Pedro Sula, successfully passing all her subjects.
“There is little time left to reach the final goal, although it has not been easy all this time with the pandemic,” says Tania, mentioning how complicated this period has been for her and her classmates. “Many teachers do not take the time to ask how we are doing or if we understand the assigned topics.” Because of that, they often had to look for help in other ways.
Despite all of this, she is confident in her abilities in the face of these challenges. “I hope everyone is taking good care of yourselves due to the pandemic that is affecting the world. I send you many greetings and hugs!”
Stephanie
Stephanie is already in her fifth year of medicine at the Catholic University of San Pedro Sula. Although she follows a large part of her studies virtually from her parents’ farm, she has also been able to attend clinics and hospitals to learn different medical specialties in a practical way.
These specialties are divided into 3 parts: Internal Medicine 1, Pediatrics 1 and Gynecology and Obstetrics 1, with the last being her favorite: “In this rotation they allowed us to go to the hospital once a week. It was a wonderful experience. I learned a lot about the care given to pregnant women and I was also present during labor and cesarean sections.”
She also expressed great interest in her alternative medicine class “I found it very interesting to learn how we find many medicinal plants in nature, and there are a wide variety of therapies that can be complemented with medicine.”
It has been difficult for Stephanie not to be able to carry out hospital internships in all subjects, as would be normal in a period without a pandemic. However, she is happy for the opportunities she has had this year given the difficulties of this time. “I am very grateful to educate. for helping me move forward to meet my goals.”
Javier
After some complications with his own and his family’s health, Javier has managed to continue with most of his courses, fully preparing himself for this new year.
This last quarter he took two important courses: Professional Ethics and Advanced Programming II. Although this second course was particularly challenging, he passed with excellent marks. “Each class has its degree of difficulty and it feels good to be able to pass them with effort and dedication,” he says.
Regarding the situation of the pandemic, Javier expresses his concern about the growth of the new variant: “The truth is that there is a lot of contamination here in my community and it is scary to get infected with any of the variants of COVID.”
Despite this, he hopes to stay healthy so that he can learn more and overcome the difficulties that this period has put on him and his family.

A dos años de la pandemia, las ganas por aprender no decaen.
Luego de casi dos años, las escuelas hondureñas han comenzado un retorno paulatino a clases presenciales. No obstante, en las últimas semanas se ha detectado un aumento importante de casos positivos COVID-19 asociados a la variante Ómicron. Habrá que esperar para ver qué depara para este nuevo año escolar que pronto comienza.
En Universidades gran parte de las clases continúan de forma virtual, como es el caso de nuestros estudiantes becados Stephanie, Tania y Javier. Sabemos que no ha sido un tiempo fácil para ellos, por lo que hablamos con cada uno para que nos cuenten cómo han vivido este periodo en sus estudios, en lo personal y sus objetivos para este nuevo año.
Tania
¡El tiempo pasa tan rápido! Tania acaba de finalizar su cuarto año académico de Ingeniería Industrial en San Pedro Sula, aprobando todas sus asignaturas con éxito.
“Ya falta poco para llegar a la meta final, aunque no ha sido fácil todo este tiempo luego de la pandemia,” relata Tania, mencionando lo complicado que ha sido este periodo tanto para ella como para sus compañeros de clase. “Muchos maestros no se toman el tiempo para impartir una clase, preguntar cómo vamos o si entendemos los temas asignados”, por lo que muchas veces han tenido que buscar ayuda por otros medios.
A pesar de todo esto, ella confía en sus capacidades frente a estos desafíos. “Espero que se estén cuidando mucho por la pandemia que está afectando al mundo. ¡Les mando muchos saludos y abrazos!”.
Stephanie
¡Stephanie ya cursa su quinto año de medicina en la Universidad Catolica! Si bien aún gran parte estudia de modo virtual desde la finca de sus padres, también ha podido asistir a consultorios y hospitales para aprender de forma práctica distintas especialidades médicas.
Estas especialidades se dividen en 3 partes: Medicina Interna 1, Pediatría 1 y Ginecología y obstetricia 1, siendo esta última su favorita: “En esta rotación nos permitieron ir al hospital una vez a la semana. Fue una experiencia maravillosa. Aprendí muchísimo sobre la atención que se les da a las mujeres embarazadas y también estuve presente en parto y en cesáreas.”
Además se manifestó muy interesada por su clase de medicina alternativa “Me pareció muy interesante aprender como en la naturaleza encontramos muchas plantas medicinales y que hay gran variedad de terapias que se pueden complementar con la medicina.”
Para Stephanie ha sido difícil el hecho de no poder realizar prácticas hospitalarias en todas las asignaturas, como sería lo normal en un periodo sin pandemia. Sin embargo, se encuentra feliz y agradecida de las oportunidades que ha tenido en este año para enfrentar las dificultades de este tiempo. “Agradezco mucho a educate. por ayudarme a seguir adelante para cumplir mis metas.”.
Javier
Luego de algunas complicaciones con su salud y la de su familia, Javier ha logrado continuar con la mayoría de sus cursos, preparándose de lleno para este nuevo año que comienza.
Este último cuatrimestre cursó dos importantes cursos: Ética profesional y Programación Avanzada II. Aunque este segundo curso fue particularmente desafiante, lo aprobó con excelentes calificaciones. “Cada clase tiene su grado de dificultad y pues se siente bien poder aprobarlas con esfuerzo y dedicación”.
Respecto a la situación de la pandemia, Javier manifiesta su preocupación respecto al crecimiento de la nueva variante. “La verdad que si hay bastante contagio aquí en mi comunidad y pues da miedo contagiarse de cualquier de esas variantes de COVID y que no haya los medicamentos que se necesitan para combatir esas enfermedades”.
Pese a esto, él confía en mantenerse sano para así poder aprender más y sobreponerse a las dificultades que este periodo le ha puesto al él y su familia. ¡Tú puedes Javier!
