Last September, the wonderful ladies of Hondureños en Holanda organised the Fiesta Bailable to raise money for educate. It turned out to be a great evening full of dancing, Latin music, Honduran food and great people. That evening left us full of inspiration and excitement to organise a similar event. So we set to work and last Thursday our efforts paid off: we danced the night away at our very own Fiesta Latina!
We started the process off with our first open meeting. People who were interested in our cause were invited to come along to one of our meetings, to see if they wanted to volunteer with us. This meeting left us with a group of hard-working girls – Hanna, Carla and Marieke – who were excited to help us organise an event. After a couple of meetings of brainstorming about venues, activities, menus and DJ’s, our event started to take shape.
What stuck with me most during this whole process, was how easy it actually was to organise an event like this. Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot to take care of: think of music, entertainment, food, and get a venue. We just got very lucky that we had such an amazing group of people around us that made the whole process very smooth.
Let’s start with the venue: it took one evening of brainstorming and a couple of emails to find OT301. The concert manager of OT301, Colin, gave me a call and invited us to come over the very next day to discuss details. And that was it! Venue; check!
This was not the first Latin dance party that OT301 would be hosting, so Colin even had a list of possible DJ’s for us. And again, it only took a couple of emails to get phone calls from two amazing DJ’s who were excited to play at our party in return for a couple of drinks and an Uber ride home. Music; check!
When the venue and the music was settled, we thought it was time to invite our friends. The moment the Facebook event was online, we got a message from Degoor Jose Pinto Torres.
Degoor Torres is a professional bachata dancer. We were promoting that we would be having a dance workshop at our event, even though we had not yet found dance teachers to give the workshop. He immediately offered to give the workshop together with Hasmik, better known as Miss Netherlands. Entertainment; check!
When the event was published, we also got a message from Abraham, a Honduran acquaintance who asked if we had someone taking care of the Honduran snacks. Of course we hadn’t gotten around to that yet, so when he offered to bring home-made tamales, we took him up on that generous offer. Honduran food; check!
Next to Abraham’s tamales, we wanted to sell some sweet snacks, nachos, and quesadillas. From previous experience, we know that a large portion of the money we make from selling food often goes to the groceries. For the first time, we reached out to supermarkets to ask if they were interested in sponsoring our expenses for groceries. Johnno, the manager of the Albert Heijn supermarket at Amsterdam’s famous Museumplein, loved the idea and donated €100 worth of groceries. Food; check!
With all of this help, there was honestly not much for us left to do. At the party, we sold our home-made cakes and cookies, and Antonia gave a presentation about our work and our current projects.
That left us enough time to enjoy the bachata workshop and dance the night away!

¡Nuestra propia Fiesta Latina!

El septiembre pasado, las maravillosas mujeres de Hondureños en Holanda organizaron una Fiesta Bailable para recaudar fondos para educate.. Fue una gran noche llena de baile, música latina, comida hondureña y excelentes personas. Después de esta noche, nos quedamos llenos de de inspiración y emoción para organizar un evento similar. Así que nos pusimos a trabajar y el jueves pasado nuestros esfuerzos dieron sus frutos: ¡bailamos toda la noche en nuestra propia Fiesta Latina!
Comenzamos el proceso con nuestra primera reunión abierta. Personas que estaban interesadas en nuestra causa tenían la oportunidad de asistir a una de nuestras reuniones para ver si querían ser voluntarios con nosotros. Esta reunión nos dejó con un grupo de chicas muy trabajadoras – Hanna, Carla y Marieke – que estaban emocionadas de ayudarnos a organizar un evento. Después de un par de reuniones y intercambio de ideas sobre lugares, actividades, menús y DJs, nuestro evento comenzó a tomar forma.
Lo que más me impresionó durante todo este proceso, fue lo fácil que fue organizar un evento como este. No me malinterpreten, había mucho de lo que nos ocupábamos: pensar en la música, el entretenimiento, la comida y conseguir un lugar. Tuvimos mucha suerte de contar con un grupo increíble de personas, que hizo que todo el proceso fuera muy sencillo.
Comencemos con el lugar: tomó una tarde de lluvia de ideas y un par de correos electrónicos para encontrar OT301. El gerente de conciertos de OT301, Colin, me llamó y nos invitó a venir al día siguiente para discutir los detalles. ¡Y eso fue todo! Lugar de encuentro; ¡comprobado!
Esta no fue la primera fiesta de baile latino que OT301 ha organizado, por lo que Colin también tenía una lista de posibles DJ para nosotros. Y otra vez, solo se necesitaron un par de correos electrónicos para recibir llamadas de dos DJ increíbles que estaban emocionados de tocar en nuestra fiesta a cambio de un par de cervezas y un viaje a casa en Uber. Música; ¡comprobado!
Cuando tuvimos el lugar y la música ya confirmados, pensamos que era hora de invitar a nuestros amigos. En el momento en que el evento de Facebook estuvo en línea, recibimos un mensaje de Degoor Jose Pinto Torres.
Degoor es un bailarín profesional de bachata. Promovimos que tendríamos un taller de baile en nuestro evento, a pesar de que aún no habíamos encontrado alguien para impartir el taller. Inmediatamente se ofreció a dar el taller junto con Hasmik, más conocida como Miss Países Bajos. Entretenimiento; ¡comprobado!
Cuando se publicó el evento, también recibimos un mensaje de Abraham, un conocido hondureño que nos preguntó si había alguien que se ocupara de la comida hondureña. Por supuesto, aún no habíamos llegado a eso, así que cuando se ofreció a traer tamales hechos en casa, aceptamos esa generosa oferta. Comida hondureña; ¡comprobado!
Junto a los tamales de Abraham, queríamos vender algunos cosas dulces, y también nachos y quesadillas. De nuestra experiencia anterior, sabemos que una gran parte del dinero que ganamos con la venta de comida va a cubrir los gastos de los ingredientes. Por primera vez, nos acercamos a los supermercados para preguntarles si estaban interesados en patrocinar nuestros gastos de comestibles. A Johnno, el gerente del supermercado Albert Heijn en el famoso Museumplein de Ámsterdam, le encantó la idea y donó €100 en comestibles. Comida; ¡comprobado!
Con toda esta ayuda, honestamente no nos quedaba mucho por hacer. En la fiesta, vendimos nuestros pasteles caseros y galletas, y Antonia dio una presentación sobre nuestro trabajo y nuestros proyectos actuales.
¡Eso nos dejó suficiente tiempo para disfrutar del taller de bachata y bailar toda la noche!
